Laxá í Aðaldal, affectionately known as “The Queen of Icelandic Rivers,” or “Big Laxá” (The Big Salmon River), is Iceland’s most iconic salmon fishing destination. Situated in the idyllic Aðaldalur valley near Húsavík, this family-run river has earned its legendary status thanks to its grandeur and the record-breaking Atlantic salmon it produces - some reaching up to an impressive 120 cm.
The two renowned beats, Laxámyri and Nessvæði, have been combined into one unified operation, offering a seamless experience across six beats with 12 rods. This arrangement provides anglers with diverse fishing opportunities, from calm, wide stretches to faster currents that weave through a valley of lush greenery and dramatic lava fields. The river’s serene waters are said to have a meditative quality, making each visit as restorative as it is exhilarating.
Often referred to as “The Queen” and featured in nearly every book on Icelandic fly fishing, Big Laxá is celebrated not only for its remarkable salmon but also for its rich history and unique character. Its carefully managed beats deliver an unparalleled angling experience, blending tradition, sustainability, and an intimate connection with Icelandic nature.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler chasing your next trophy catch or new to salmon fishing, Laxá í Aðaldal offers a world-class adventure. Discover the magic of “Big Laxá,” where every cast has the potential to create lifelong memories.
